Semantic Echoes

Risograph, Editorial
Spring 2025

Advised by Margarita Barrios-Ponce for Graphic Design 1 @ Northeastern University
Semantic Echoes is a book of 35 postcards, based on 35 of the Webster Dictionary Word-of-the-Day’s, which seek to challenge how we perceive the English language.

Using the three axes of VAD Analysis, a concept borrowed from Computational Linguistics, these postcards quantify the emotional perception of words through three scales: Valence, the positivity or negativity of the emotion; Arousal, the intensity of the emotion, and Dominance, the sense of control or power over the emotion.  Using these dimensions, each scale dictates the form of the animation.

These dynamic abstractions seek to visualize the strong tonal nuances of the English Language using a method often associated with artificial intelligence.
